What is a living shoreline?
Living shorelines use natural or nature-based components such as marsh vegetation, oyster structures, coir materials, stone or hybrid features to stabilize suitable shorelines while maintaining ecological function.
Where they fit
They are generally most compatible with lower-energy shorelines. Open Gulf exposure, deep water, navigation constraints and heavily developed edges may require different strategies or hybrid designs.
Permitting still matters
Nature-based does not mean permit-free. Work in tidal waters or wetlands can still require agency review. Start with the Texas shoreline permit guide.
